Mikles Family Farm received 3 inches of rain last night. The pumpkin plants are blooming and the bees visit each sunny morning to pollinate the beautiful yellow, orange flowers. Did you know that pumpkin plants have both male (boy) and female (girl) flowers on the same plant? There are about 10 boy flowers for every one girl flower. The honey bee’s tiny feet will carry pollen from the boy flower to the girl flower. When this happens the girl flower will form a tiny, green pumpkin. Isn’t nature interesting? It’s so much fun to watch the pumpkins grow!

The maze field is about 24 inches tall right now and with this rain it will really shoot up tall in a hurry now. It’s still a secret what the maze design is this but if you will watch, soon you will see a picture of it on the website.

Meet Max. He was born on July 3rd at a local dairy and came to live at Mikles Family Farm on July 10th. Yes, Max is really a calf but when we take him out to be with the cow herd, he comes straight back to the house to hang out with dogs, Roy and Kimi. It’s not uncommon to see Max running and playing with them. Roy has learned to avoid those calf hooves. They hurt when Max gets too close!

When Farmer Robin comes outside and sees Max lounging in her flower beds, she shoos him out in a hurry! Max likes to stay where he can keep an eye on the back door. He knows his bottle comes out that door both in the morning and evening. Max also eats grain and grazes on soft, green grass.

Max will live at the maze and pumpkin patch so he can meet all the children.
